This was a very interesting visit to a program that just opened up in their new home last spring.
As an outgrowth of programming that has been happening for many years on the campus of Valley Forge Educational Services and The Vanguard School,
Customized Workforce Solutions is a program being offered to individuals who are not only coming from Vanguard School but from a growing number of school districts in the area.
I met with Holly Zipperer who is the Director of Career and Community and Engagement Services and Sascha Baello who is the Site Supervisor of Customized Workforce Solutions. Their offices are not on the campus but located at 5 Station Ave. in Berwyn and directly across from the train station.
CWS offers employment services to young adults once they have finished high school with the discovery process, finding a job and then support once the individual has been hired.
They also offer social events and some overnight experiences such as renting a house down the shore or camping in the Poconos.
While they run small group instruction and training in their offices on Station Ave., it was interesting to learn that each client is treated as an individual and handled differently.
* Participants are not required to come to their office on a daily basis to receive services.
* Services are typically provided in our participants' homes and communities.
* The goal is to help participants find employment in their local area.
* CWS is not able to provide transportation to/from a work location but can help identify transportation resources.
* CWS is approved as providers of these services by multiple funding sources.
In addition to the personalized services, CWS also offers a Vocational Immersion Program from July 9th through August 3rd this summer. Lasting a total of four weeks, the first three weeks are campus-based training and transition into various community workplaces. The fourth week is independent living residency plus 20-25 hours in community-based employment. The program concludes with individual evaluations of performance in the classroom setting, the workplace, and the residential experience.
While no place is perfect for everyone, these are people who are knowledgeable and can be a tremendous resource for young adults who have graduated from high school and are just beginning the journey in the world of work.
